How much could your brand save with variable EPR fees?
Our work shows that variable EPR fees aren’t just better for the planet — they’re better for your bottom line too. By advocating for a variable EPR system, fashion and textiles brands can benefit from greater cost savings and drive real impact. Variable EPR fees reward brand efforts to create more durable, repairable, and recyclable products, rewarding circularity at every step.
As the only organisation offering this innovative approach, we have the data, expertise, and know-how to help your brand navigate, implement, and benefit from variable EPR fee systems.
Compare the potential cost of fixed and variable EPR fees. The sample data shown to the right reveals the potential savings a brand could achieve if a variable EPR fee system that rewards circular product design is introduced. Variable EPR fees incentivise better practices, helping your brand, the wider industry, and the planet.

What are EPR systems?
EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility. EPR systems hold producers responsible for the lifecycle of their products, including disposal. EPR fee systems are being presented as part of a wider set of policy options, including driving better collection of unwanted products. EPR fees can be structured as fixed or variable fees. Fixed fees are charged at a flat rate per item placed on the market, whereas variable fees can be adjusted based on product characteristics such as durability, composition, or recyclability.
We have seen the introduction of textile EPR schemes in the EU, with France leading the way in the implementation of such schemes. The UK is in the planning stages for textiles EPR, which means there is time for the UK industry to investigate and recommend a fee system that has a real impact and rewards more circular and sustainable behaviour. At WEFT, we provide the data and insights needed to understand the potential impacts of different EPR fee systems.
Will countries adopt the same EPR fee systems?
We think this is possible —we can demonstrate how a single data input system can satisfy different countries’ fee policy objectives. The EU has already signalled an aim for harmonisation. We have a great opportunity to lead this harmonisation — if we act right now.
How does the EPR Fee Calculator work?
Our calculator estimates your brand’s costs under a potential fixed EPR fee by multiplying your total product count by some estimated standard fee rates. This offers a simple snapshot of how fixed EPR fees might impact your bottom line. Our Sandbox helps brands calculate how much money they could save through variable EPR fees. If you would like to see how variable EPR fees could reduce your brand’s EPR cost obligations, get in touch about joining the Sandbox.
What data points do you use to determine variable EPR fees?
We analyse real sales volume and product specification data to calculate variable EPR fees. Our methodology, developed through our Clothing EPR Sandbox Project, tested multiple fee models and ways to reward accurate data reporting and circular design. The attributes we analyse can flex according to individual government and industry priorities. In the Clothing EPR Sandbox Project, we analysed product data for over 250 million products sold, ranging across 500,000 unique product styles and types, ensuring we had a depth of data to inform our variable EPR fee calculations.
Why should my brand join the Sandbox?
By joining our Sandbox, you can see how variable EPR fees could reduce your future EPR costs compared to fixed fees. You can then use clear evidence to engage governments on designing intelligent EPR fee systems. We handle all data analysis and provide insights into how your product attributes can align with future EPR requirements, potentially saving you money and empowering you to reach your sustainability and circularity goals.
